Product Description

Precision clocks are traditionally named "Chronometer" (chronos is Greek for time). An accurate marine chronometer was recognized as crucial to navigation in the 18th century. The British Admiralty paid out the sum of 20.000 British Pounds, equivalent to a million today, for the prototype of the first working chronometer. Longitude had to be determined by establishing local time. Latitude was found through astronomical observation.

Our reproduction chronometer is a truly beautiful piece, fashioned after an original by the famous London instrument maker, John Poole. The brass inlaid case is solid wood, mahogany finished. The brass cased clock is mounted in concentric rings, called gimbals. Gimbal rings compensated for the pitching and rolling of the ship. (H: 5.75", W: 4.75") by Authentic Models.
