In 1885, the
Cutty
Sark sailed from Sydney Australia to London in 73 days,
setting a record and beating her old rival, the
Thermopylae, in
the process. She hoisted 32,000 square feet of sail and had a
top speed of 17-1/2 knots.
Mantua's kit is designed from the original plans of the Cutty
Sark, now restored and on display in Greenwich, England.
Construction is double plank-on-bulkhead using limewood
inner and walnut outer planking. All wooden parts are laser
cut to facilitate assembly. Authentically detailed gilded metal
ornaments grace her bow and stern. Solid brass yard collars
and supports encircle the vessel, and individual copper plates
cover the hull. Other fittings are copper, brass, cast metal
and pre-finished hardwoods. Eight giant sheets of plans and
an instruction booklet assure you of an accurate model.
