Product Description

Juneau, Alaska: Five Fingers Light Station was located in the northern part of Frederick Sound in Alaska. The 49' frame tower, with a forth order lens, rose from the end of a two - story dwelling that had its fog signal facility attached. Helicopters landed on a nearby platform bringing in supplies and personnel. In 1931, the station was fitted with a radio beacon.

Two years later the lighthouse and fog signal building suddenly burst into flames. The keepers fought the blaze, but succeeded in only saving the boathouse and carpenter shop.

The current structure was commissioned in December 1935 on a nearby island. To prevent the new lighthouse from suffering the same fate as its predecessor it was constructed of reinforced concrete and is located on a concrete pier. The one-story building contains a square 68' tower displaying a forth order electric light 81' above the water and provided quarters for three keepers. Five Fingers was the last lighthouse in Alaska to be automated, its personal not bidding farewell until 1983. (7" x 9.5", Illuminated)
