anchored or moored
at the entrance to a
harbor or at the edge
of a channel, as a
guide to navigators.
They are
instrumental in
providing a system of
safe navigation of
coastal regions
throughout the world.
Bell buoys are
surmounted with a
bell that is sounded
by the motion of the
waves. Tones are
carried for a great
distance over water,
and most bell buoys
have thier own
distinctive mix of
tones for easy
identification, even
before a sea-faring
navigator actually
reaches them.
The North Country Wind
Bells™ are made with
a high-grade steel and powder coated with an outside durable finish to endure the weather for years to come. With long term exposure to weather, it will develop a rich rusty color, but will not rust out. You can apply a black outside spray paint on the bell to keep it looking new for years. The bells are
designed to hang
outdoors year-round,
without twisting,
tangling, or breaking.
The bells can be silenced by
pushing the clapper up into the pyramid.
The creator of the
Wind Bells™
was a New England
lobsterman for many
years. He recorded
the actual bell buoy
sounds and spent
hours cutting steel to
match the resonant
tones. This windbell
collection is based
on his interpretation
of many bell and
gong buoys along the
New England
coastline. They
provide the listener
with the beautifully
haunting tones that
accompany life in a
New England harbor
region.
