The F-14 "Tomcat", built by Grumman Aerospace, is a Carrier-based supersonic, variable
sweep wing, two-place strike fighter designed to attack and destroy enemy
aircraft at night and in all weather conditions. Designed to replace the F-4 Phantom II
fighter (phased out in 1986), the F-14A was
introduced in the mid-1970's. A total of 556 F-14A's were bought for the US Navy, while 80 roughly
similar machines were purchased by the Iranian government before the downfall of the Shah. The improved F-14B and
F-14D have been built and deployed by the Navy in modest numbers.
