Built in 1636, La Couronne is reputed to have been France's first great ship. Cardinal Richelieu personally supervised her decoration and fitting out. Ornamentation was designed and created by the most famous craftsmen and artists of her day.
One look at Corel's La Couronne ship model kit and you'll think you're back in the splendor of 17th century France. Sculptured ornamentation, figurehead, stern lanterns and other sculptured ornaments are beautifully gilded metal. Blocks, deadeyes, belaying pins, gratings and cannon carriages are walnut. Her 64 cannon and many other fittings are solid brass. Double plank-on-bulkhead construction uses pre-cut poplar for frames and keel. Planking is done with thin strips of walnut and limewood. Masts, deck and display cradle and other wooden parts are fashioned from tanganyka, beech, mahogany, and maple. Twelve sheets of plans.
